Sound Cards: PCI sound cards are hot. Dos compatibility is questionable. Can settle for the Creative AWE64. Always look for full Sound Blaster compatible Sound cards.

CD-ROM drives: Presently you can get 32X(or even 40X!) CD-ROM drives. Speed difference above 24X drives is not noticeable. IDE drives are more than enough.

Speakers: Go for a good set of speakers. In you have some money left after all the purchases, think about buying a sub-woofer also.
